3 Important Tools for Teaching Phonemic Awareness

May 15, 2017
Phonemic awareness is a skill included within the broad skill of phonological awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize and segment words into their constituent individual sounds (phonemes) making them. A phoneme in linguistics is the smallest meaningful sound unit. For instance, the word  ‘hat’ is composed of three different phonemes: /h/, /æ/, and /t/. Phonemic awareness is an important skill kids get to learn at an early age. It helps them improve their spelling and reading skills. ‘Children who can not distinguish and manipulate the sounds within spoken words have difficulty recognizing and learning the necessary print=sound relationship that is critical to proficient reading and spelling success.’ In today’s post we are sharing with you three interesting resources to help you with the teaching of phonemic awareness:

1- Reading Rockets

Reading Rockets offers some excellent tools and activities for teaching kids both phonological and phonemic awareness. Reading rocket, for those of you who don’t know it, is ‘a national multimedia literacy initiative offering information and resources on how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help.’

2- Building Phonemic Awareness With Phoneme Isolation

‘In this phonemic awareness lesson designed for a first-grade classroom, students engage in games and chants to recognize the same sounds in different words. Students match objects with the same beginning or ending sound, identify whether a given sound occurs at the beginning or ending of a word, and connect phonemes with graphemes.’

3- Alphabet Organizer

‘Engage students and build phonemic awareness by using Alphabet Organizer in the classroom. Students create an alphabet book or alphabet chart with words for each letter of the alphabet. Or choose just one word per letter and upload an image to help early readers make a visual connection between the word and the beginning letter.’
